Manchester United can repeat Bruno Fernandes Man City trick to solve midfield puzzle
Even the most ardent Christian Eriksen critic would struggle to make an argument for him not starting the Manchester derby on Sunday.
The Dane's introduction in the second half against FC Copenhagen turned the game in United's favour. His fine display in the Champions League followed another good performance at Sheffield United and Eriksen surely must line up against City at the weekend.
While his displays for United have been impressive recently, this does not mask his defensive vulnerabilities. Eriksen has looked most effective when he does not need to concern himself with this side of the game but if he needs to be included in the starting XI this weekend, as is the consensus, who should drop out.

Unfortunately for Eriksen, his best role is currently being held by United captain Bruno Fernandes. In a more attacking capacity, the Portuguese star can concentrate more on creating chances.
Fernandes does not need to drop out of the starting XI entirely though to allow Eriksen a place in the team. If we cast our minds back to the team which beat City earlier this year, we can see how Erik ten Hag managed to deploy both midfielders in his XI.
The current captain was pushed to the right flank with Eriksen playing in an advanced role. Meanwhile, Casemiro and Fred sat deep to protect the defence.
Of course, Fred has since moved on but his duties could be replicated by either Scott McTominay or Sofyan Amrabat. By replicating this approach, United will not only fix the issue of finding room for Eriksen in the XI but also experiment with an alternative to the current winger situation.
