Manchester United and Erik ten Hag could repeat unpopular selection decision vs Chelsea

Roy Keane might want to look away now. The former Manchester United captain was scathing in his assessment after Erik ten Hag and his players were dominated at St. James' Park.

But one man placed in his crosshairs after the Newcastle match - Anthony Martial - could have justification for inclusion against Chelsea. But it would not be a popular decision.

Martial is not the long-term solution. United were open to selling him this summer in order to part-fund a transfer for Harry Kane. That pursuit never got off the ground though as Kane moved to Bayern Munich and United turned to Rasmus Hojlund instead.

The Reds splashed out £72million for Hojlund and raised eyebrows in doing so. However, that vast figure represents the striker he can become and not the one Ten Hag currently has at his disposal.

Hojlund must be given time to develop before judgement. United match-goers know that as well as anybody and there have been plenty of encouraging signs when it comes to his general performances.

Goals have been a concern. The ex-Atalanta prospect has yet to open his Premier League account while grabbing five goals in as many Champions League outings. Perhaps the European style is better suited to him right now and United have to recognise how best to nurture him.

As with any young player, Hojlund would benefit from being dipped in and out of the team. There are two primary issues with that, one being the lack of other attacking options. The other is the price tag. But that must be secondary.

Hojlund does not have the same luxury as Kobbie Mainoo, for example, who can turn to players such as Casemiro
