Manchester United already told what role 'exceptional' James Garner can play

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Manchester United loanee James Garner.

The 20-year-old received a standing ovation from Nottingham Forest fans after being substituted late on, as they stunned FA Cup holders Leicester City to knock them out in the fourth round.

Garner provided an assist in the 4-1 rout and has gone from strength to strength in his second spell at the City Ground after rejoining Forest in the summer.

Robinson has lauded the "exceptional" midfielder and has emphasised his quality, tipping him for a role in the United first team.

He told Football Insider: "[James] Garner has been exceptional at Forest. He is an example of why players get sent out on loan.

"He can play at the top level and I think he has proven that at Forest. I don’t think he’s one that will go straight into the Man United side but I think there is a first-team role there for him and he will feature next season.

"The club will have a very close eye on his development. At the moment, he is played extremely well in a Forest side that are in great form."

The Manchester Evening News reported this week that the Birkenhead-born academy graduate is hopeful of staying at Old Trafford next season.

A recall for the central midfielder had been discussed in January but the opportunity was turned down and will see Garner see out the remainder of his agreement with the Championship play-off hopefuls.
