Manchester United agree to sell Tahith Chong on deadline day

Manchester United have reached an agreement for the sale of forward Tahith Chong on deadline day of the summer transfer window.

The Manchester Evening News understands Birmingham have won the race to sign the Dutch winger after some late interest from fellow Championship side West Brom.

Birmingham have agreed to pay United a fee for Chong, who is in the last year of his contract, while West Brom were interested in taking him on loan instead, something that didn't appeal to United.

It is understood he will put pen to paper on a five-year contract, with the deal subject to a medical.

Chong, 22, was given a chance in United's pre-season tour squad this summer but was deemed surplus to requirements after failing to make an impact on his new manager.

United also loaned fellow right winger Amad to Championship side Sunderland this week as they looked to trim the fat in attack ahead of completing a move for Ajax ace Antony.

Chong will join fellow United youngster Hannibal Mejbri at St. Andrew's after the Tunisian completed a loan move to Birmingham last weekend.

The Dutch forward joined United from Feyenoord's academy in 2016 and he made his debut against Reading in the FA Cup third round in January 2019. He has not played competitively for United since the Europa League last-16 second leg against LASK in August 2020.

He spent last season on loan at Birmingham where he scored once and assisted two goals in 16 starts for the Blues, but his season was interrupted by a four-month lay-off due to groin surgery.
