Manchester United ace Scott McTominay explains what makes Erik ten Hag 'very different'

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay believes Erik ten Hag's ability to bring fresh ideas to the table is the main difference between him and previous managers at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag joined United in May 2022. His first year in Manchester has seen him face different challenges, chief among which was the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, the Reds enjoyed a good first campaign under the Dutchman. United won their first silverware in six years when they secured the Carabao Cup. United also finished third in the table, guaranteeing Champions League football for next year.

Sitting down to discuss his manager, McTominay revealed how he has changed United's approach to football in his first year. Speaking to the club's official website, he said: "Obviously, the transition in terms of his style is very, very different to some other coaches, but, as I say, that’s football.

"He’s always having you thinking, and having you think about new ideas and stuff like that. It’s good, that’s the best way to be with football: Open-minded and going into every game, if he asks you to do something, you do it to the best of your abilities and you try to learn it as best as you can. I think, for me, it’s great. I love it."

Despite being deployed in a defensive midfield role for the Reds, McTominay is no stranger to playing further forward. The Scot scored three goals for United and he is determined to add more next season.

"Every goal that you score is special but, like you say, I should score more goals than I do," he added. "I do get into good positions and I can shoot left foot and right foot, which, obviously, I’m confident to do.
