Manchester's The French named one of UK's top 20 restaurants

Food industry bible Square Meal has revealed its annual top 100 restaurants in the UK, and one Manchester eatery has landed itself in the top 20. Adam Reid at The French has been named number 16 in the prestigious list.

In its entry, the grand restaurant in the Midland hotel says ‘Adam Reid’s seasonal, modern British food cleverly mixes contemporary cooking with memories from his Manchester upbringing’. Reid took over The French in 2016, after it was relaunched by chef Simon Rogan just a few years before.

Rogan’s recently awarded three Michelin star L’Enclume also features on this year’s Square Meal list, at number five. Meanwhile, the much celebrated two Michelin star Moor Hall near Ormskirk is at number seven, and Michael O’Hare’s The Man Behind The Curtain in Leeds is at 12.

Leading this year’s list is Osip in Somerset at number one, and chef Gareth Ward’s Ynyshir in Powys in second place. Making up the rest of the top five is Pensons in Tenbury Wells, and Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, however Mana, Manchester's only Michelin-starred restaurant, doesn't feature in the top 100 at all.

SquareMeal’s Caroline Hendry said: “A huge congratulations to all 100 restaurants, and in particular to our winners Osip and BiBi, who absolutely blew us away with their menus, their work ethics and their celebration of incredible suppliers.

“While some institutions have remained in the Top 100, lots of newcomers have also risen up the ranks since we last ran the awards; a wonderful accolade for each new restaurant that has launched in such a trying couple of years for hospitality.”
