Manchester has been named one of the best cities in the UK - but misses out on top spot

Manchester has been named one of the best cities in the UK, by readers of Condé Nast Traveller. The magazine's annual Readers' Choice Awards look for the best hotels, resorts, cities, countries, islands, transport lines and more - against a set criteria.

Over 240,000 readers submitted their vote, revealing their favourite spots across the world. Cambridge scooped the top spot, followed by Glasgow in second.

Dropping in the ranking was London, which came third. While Manchester did place, it might come as a surprise to some that it only ranked in sixth - tailing after Edinburgh in fourth and Cardiff in fifth.

Manchester received a ranking of 82.22, while Liverpool, which placed in seventh received a ranking of 76.78. Also making the cut were Belfast in eighth position, Bath in ninth and Oxford in tenth.

The publication said: "Vibrant Manchester is packed with excellent chefs, music and culture. Grand libraries, street art, record shops and galleries are among the best things to do in the city, while excellent restaurants in Manchester range from Korean cooking to donut shops via Spanish, Italian, Vietnamese and Indian cuisine. There's a thriving LGBTQ+ scene in Manchester, too."

As for its recommendations on where to stay in the metropolis, the travel magazine gave a shout out to Whitworth Locke, just opposite Canal Street, detailing its "apartments painted in dreamy pastels in an old cotton mill". Earlier this year Manchester was voted one of the best cities in the world by Time Out Magazine.
