Man Utd: 'Small chance' of move for 46-goal star at Old Trafford

Manchester United are now unlikely to sign PSV star Cody Gakpo, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

United have been chasing the Netherlands international for much of the summer, but Jones reckons that Antony’s imminent move to Old Trafford has all-but put an end to talk of Gakpo linking up with Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag has been desperate to improve his attacking options throughout the window and he’s about to land one of his top targets, with Sky Sports reporting that Antony has agreed a £85m switch to the Theatre of Dreams.

The Brazilian is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days after missing Ajax’s game at Utrecht at the weekend.

Despite Antony’s imminent arrival, The Sun claim that Ten Hag is keen on signing two attackers before the deadline.

Furthermore, Gakpo, who’s scored 46 goals for PSV, recently claimed that United are interested in his services and stated that a switch to Old Trafford is a “serious” possibility.

“There are also other options, United are a serious option,” he said. “I can hear it all. I try to shut myself off from it, but it’s difficult.”

Despite Gakpo’s comments, Jones has described the Red Devils’ chances of bringing the 23-year-old to the club as “very unlikely”.

When asked whether United signing Antony rules out Gakpo joining, he told GIVEMESPORT: “It pretty much does. I guess there’s a small chance that if Ronaldo leaves then they could go for him as another option.

“But I’m told it’s very unlikely at this point, it’s not on the verge or anything like that and there are other teams looking at Gakpo, so I can’t see it happening.”

Bringing in Gakpo would obviously add even greater depth to Ten Hag’s squad, but they don’t necessarily need him.
