Man Utd: £42m star could join Antony at Old Trafford

Manchester United could sign Cody Gakpo in addition to Antony in the final days of the transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Red Devils are eager to strengthen their forward line before September’s deadline and appear to be focussing their attention and resources on Antony, but that has not ruled out a move for Gakpo as well.

Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News has reported that United ‘are confident’ of signing Ajax’s Brazilian star before the window slams shut on Thursday.

United and the reigning Eredivisie champions have been locked in negotiations over Antony throughout the summer with an €80 million (£67.6m) already being rebuffed.

Luckhurst claims that Erik ten Hag’s charges will return with a package that could near €100m (£84m) as they remain determined to land Antony following an underwhelming start to the current campaign.

However, Sky Sports previously reported that United were prepared a move for PSV Eindhoven’s Gakpo after becoming frustrated in their pursuit of Antony.

The 23-year-old is valued at £42m by his boyhood club but was unable to fire them into the Champions League group stages, falling to Rangers in the play-offs, something that could work in United’s favour.

Cristiano Ronaldo has made his desire to leave Old Trafford in search of Champions League football clear this summer, and his agent Jorge Mendes is reportedly attempting to broker a move to Napoli.

And Jones believes that if the five-time Ballon d’Or winner does get his wish and departs for pastures new, then United could have room for both Antony and Gakpo in their first-team squad.
