Man Utd: Romano reveals £72.9m star will be offered 'big salary' at Old Trafford

Manchester United are prepared to offer transfer target Frenkie De Jong a “really important salary” in order to lure him from Barcelona, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Netherlands international has emerged as one of United’s prime targets for the summer transfer window.

Earlier this week, Romano reported on Twitter that the Red Devils are in direct talks with Barcelona over a deal for the midfielder, who worked with new Old Trafford boss Erik ten Hag at Ajax.

Barcelona are reportedly holding out for “guaranteed fee” of €85m (£72.9m), whereas United have thus far offered only €65m (£55.7m) up front and €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons.

De Jong seems like the ideal signing to kick off a new era at Old Trafford, but the two clubs appear a little apart in their valuations of the player.

However, it seems there would be no such dispute over De Jong’s personal terms were he to join United.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, Romano revealed that United will offer De Jong wages similar to what he’s currently earning at the Nou Camp.

Romano told GMS: “It would be a really important salary, important contract. So from a financial point of view, Manchester United know that if they want to sign Frenkie De Jong, they need to offer kind of the same contract or they will have no chance. So they are prepared to pay this kind of big salary he’s getting at Barcelona”.

According to Salary Sport, De Jong currently earns £164k per week at Barcelona. That makes him the club’s joint-fourth highest earner, excluding Ousmane Dembele who looks set to leave the club on a free transfer once his contract officially expires in the summer.
