Man Utd receive Darwin Nunez transfer boost from striker's personal advisers
Benfica striker Darwin Nunez has set his sights on a summer move to the Premier League.
And that is certain to alert Manchester United who are looking for a new No.9 this summer and have got Nunez on their list of potential candidates.
But there could be a major sticking point in that Nunez wants Champions League football with Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid also watching developments and United will not be in Europe’s top competition. Nunez’s advisers believe his style could be well suited to English football and United have been monitoring developments in the hope the 22-year-old Uruguay international will prefer a Premier League switch.
So far no-one has come close to Benfica’s valuation and the Portuguese giants have tied him down to a contract until 2025 with a £130m buy-out clause.The figure of around £70m is a more likely target with Benfica likely to be ready to sell at the right price. Newcastle and Wolves have also shown interest, Brighton have scouted him in the past but now his valuation puts him in the market of Europe’s top clubs.
Benfica seem likely to begin an auction this summer and are determined to get a big price after Nunez’s outstanding season, including six goals in the Champions League which helped knock out Ajax as they reached the quarter finals. They lost to Liverpool but Nunez scored in both legs of the quarter final, including at Anfield where he earned rave reviews. United are desperate to boost their firepower this summer especially with Manchester City signing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in what looks like a bargain deal because of a £67m buy-out clause.
