Man Utd 'looking into' signing 255-game Premier League star at Old Trafford

Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Red Devils are yet to sign a replacement for Dean Henderson, who’s spending the season on loan at Nottingham Forest, but Jones reckons that Begovic is one keeper United are targeting.

According to the Telegraph, United are interested in signing the former Stoke and Chelsea stopper as Erik ten Hag desperately hopes to bring in a number two before the window closes on 1 September.

The Old Trafford club have been in the market since Henderson secured his season-long loan deal to the City Ground, with the experienced Tom Heaton United’s only other senior goalkeeper in their squad.

Begovic is 35-years-old and has entered the final 12 months of his contract, meaning it wouldn’t be too difficult to sort a deal, providing the Bosnia and Herzegovina international is willing to make the switch.

Jones confirmed that while United have more pressing priorities on other areas on the pitch, a backup goalkeeper is still on their radar.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s interesting that they are looking down this path at the same time that Dean Henderson is doing well at Nottingham Forest.

“So, they do need to sign someone, there’s no doubt about that, and Begovic is one they’re looking into.”

A second goalkeeper is far from the most important position on the pitch, but United still need an adequate replacement at the ready if De Gea is ever unavailable.

That would appear unlikely to happen given he’s missed just five games through injury in his United career, but Begovic would be a decent backup to him.
