Erik ten Hag has squad list dilemma amid Premier League's 25-man limit

Manchester United had a busy summer with six new signings offsetting the departure of a clutch of senior players.

Erik ten Hag signed the likes of Antony and Casemiro as United invested more than £200million as they look to restore themselves as major players in English football once more. It means the United squad has a different look to it as the transfer window closes, though Ten Hag still has a whopping 32 first-team players at his disposal if he needs them in the coming weeks and months.

When it comes to the Premier League, strict registration rules are in place to prevent clubs from stockpiling players. It means sides in the top flight can only register a maximum of 25 players. It can contain no more than 17 players who do not fulfil 'homegrown' criteria. The remainder of the squad must be homegrown. Players aged 21 or under do not count towards this total though and so as many of those can be permitted.

In the case of United, there are 15 players who do not fulfil homegrown criteria, including the likes of new signing Antony and Cristiano Ronaldo. The issue Erik ten Hag must now solve is which of the homegrown players aged over 21 he must omit.

Some fringe players may be left wishing they had secured loan moves away before the deadline.
