Man Utd legend Edwin van der Sar responds to Donny van de Beek's Everton transfer

Manchester United icon Edwin van der Sar has offered his thoughts on Donny van de Beek's Old Trafford departure.

The Netherlands international, 24, has joined struggling Everton on loan for the rest of the season to play regular football for the first time since leaving Ajax in September 2020.

Van de Beek hasn't started a Premier League game this season and is keen to force his way into Louis van Gaal's squad ahead of this year's World Cup in Qatar.

And Van der Sar - who is the CEO of Ajax - has wished the midfielder the best of luck.

"Best of luck with this club in the North West of England Donny!" wrote the ex-goalkeeper on Instagram.

Van de Beek certainly need the support, as he joins an Everton team in a perilous position.

The Toffees are currently just four points and two places above the Premier League relegation zone heading into February.

That gap will be cut to just a point if they lose their next fixture against rivals Newcastle at St James' Park on Tuesday, February 8.

Everton announced three signings on deadline day. As well as luring Van de Beek to Goodison Park, they also bought midfielder Dele Alli from Tottenham.

"I’m delighted to have signed for Everton, a huge club with a great fanbase and history," said Alli. "I'm eager to get started and can't wait for my first game in an Everton shirt.

"I’m looking forward to helping the team... I'm excited to go there, show the fans what I can do, and help the club as much as I can."

Everton also brought in Frank Lampard as their new manager, with the former Chelsea and Derby County boss replacing Rafa Benitez.

"It is a huge honour for me to represent and manage a club the size and tradition of Everton," said Lampard. "I'm very hungry to get started.
