Manchester United’s incoming manager Erik ten Hag ‘will be looking at’ signing a new centre-back and a new defensive midfielder in the summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Red Devils are expected to conduct an extensive overhaul of their first-team squad over the summer transfer window following a hugely underwhelming campaign.

According to ESPN, United are set to target a new striker, central midfielder and centre-back in what will be Ten Hag’s first transfer window in the Old Trafford dugout.

And transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that long-term target Pau Torres is ‘attracting interest from top clubs again’ as he continues to excel for Villarreal.

Romano has disclosed how the Spain international’s release clause of €55/60 million (£46.3m/50.5m) ‘will be valid this summer’ before listing United, Manchester City and Chelsea as his potential suitors.

The 20-time English champions were heavily linked with Torres last summer before they opted for Raphael Varane instead, but he could finally make the switch to the Premier League over the coming months.

United may also need to bolster their engine room ahead of next season, with Paul Pogba set to leave the club on a free transfer and Nemanja Matic outlining his intention to follow the World Cup-winner out of the exit door.

Therefore, O’Rourke believes a new holding midfielder ‘will be required’ at the Theatre of Dreams alongside an additional centre-back.
