Man United told to sign Phil Foden favourite instead of Matthijs de Ligt to solve huge problem

Manchester United's capture of exciting teenager Leny Yoro is only one part of their aim to transform their defence this summer.

The Reds spent big to entice Yoro from Lille, beating Real Madrid to the 18-year-old's signature after a fee that could rise to £58.9m was agreed with the French outfit. Yoro then made his debut on Saturday, impressing over 45 minutes against Rangers.

United, however, are not finished there with their central defensive makeover. Having finished last season in eighth position and with a negative goal difference, Erik ten Hag and Ineos are determined to improve most areas of the squad.

Yoro is a replacement for fellow Frenchman Raphael Varane, who left Old Trafford when his contract expired. However, United want at least one more centre-half - potentially two - in a bid to get back into the Premier League's top four.

Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt both remain firm targets. United have had two bids for Branthwaite rejected while they have agreed personal terms with Dutchman De Ligt, but are yet to settle on a fee with his club Bayern Munich.

The deal for De Ligt looks likely to happen at some point this summer, but former United striker Teddy Sheringham has urged Ineos to move on from the player and instead swoop for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The England man has been linked with a move to United over the last month, while Arsenal are also reportedly interested in him.
