Man United handed new injury blow during Newcastle clash amid Ruben Amorim worries

Manchester United have suffered a huge injury blow after Joshua Zirkzee pulled up with a muscular problem.

With the Reds 2-1 down at St James' Park, Zirkzee was forced off the pitch after what seemed to be a hamstring issue. The Dutch forward received treatment almost immediately and was substituted by Ruben Amorim.

Rasmus Hojlund came on to replace Zirkzee. For United, this was the worst possible outcome as they look ahead to Thursday night's crucial Europa League tie against Lyon.

While neither Hojlund nor Zirkzee have been particularly prolific, the latter has been in better form recently and scored in the 2-2 draw in France earlier this week.

Depending on the severity of the muscular issue, the 23-year-old could be out for the remainder of the season.

When Zirkzee last played Newcastle, he was jeered off the pitch by the United supporters as Amorim substituted him in the first half. Asked about how the forward has improved since, the Portugese said in his pre-match press conference: "He is doing a great job.

"But also a very important thing was the way the fans reacted after that incident. Even if Josh is not playing, if you see every time he gets on the pitch or is just warming up our fans sing the Josh song.

"That is massive for the boy. So it’s 50-50.

"50 per cent the fans and 50 per cent on the part of Josh."
