Man United handed dream January transfer opportunity thanks to rare contract clause

Manchester United remain in a stage of transition despite Erik ten Hag heading into his third full season as manager.

United chiefs Dan Ashworth and Omar Berrada told MEN Sport prior to the defeat to Liverpool that they still had 100 per cent faith in Ten Hag and were happy to see his contract renewed at the end of last season. While the loss to Arne Slot's men was humbling, it is unlikely to have waivered their backing of the manager.

However, considering the lack of depth in this United squad it is unlikely to have been lost on the boardroom just how much work is still needed to make this side into a title threat once again. The midfield was rightly criticised at the weekend and it will be hoped the inclusion of Manuel Ugarte could provide some much-needed stability to the centre of the park.

It should not be forgotten though how little threat United posed the opposition's defence. Joshua Zirkzee tried in vain to spark opportunities but he was provided with little-to-no support from those on the wings.

That being said, the lack of a recognised No.9 on the bench against Liverpool was troublesome. Rasmus Hojlund's injury prevented him from being on the bench but having just two recognised strikers at the club is not enough when you consider how many competitions the Reds will be competing in - not to mention the amount of injuries which could crop up in the meantime.

Thankfully, there is a possibility that United could be handed an opportunity to make a dream transfer in January which was off the cards in the summer. When Ten Hag first brought Hojlund to the club, Victor Osimhen was on his list of alternatives.
