Man United confirm Benni McCarthy's departure as ex-striker Ruud van Nistelrooy joins

Manchester United has announced the departure of legendary Bafana Bafana forward Benni McCarthy from the coaching staff, as the club appoints Rene Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy as new assistant managers. The two will work under manager Erik ten Hag until June 2026.

McCarthy, 46, was the last piece of Ten Hag's coaching puzzle when the Dutchman arrived in 2022 as the South African was appointed first team coach, with emphasis on mentoring the club's forwards.

Along with McCarthy, Ten Hag's first assistant Mitchell van der Gaag also left the club.

Meanwhile, Steve McClaren, who was the second assistant, shifts to a senior first-team coach role while Darren Fletcher, previously the United's technical director is now first-team coach.

Ten Hag acknowledged the contributions of the departing coaches: "Mitchell has decided that now is the right time for him to pursue his own ambitions in a number one position.

"I want to pay tribute to his fantastic service over the past two years, and also to Benni for his important contributions. We send them our thanks and best wishes for the future."

McCarthy's exit marks a significant change in the coaching lineup, as Man United seeks to rejuvenate its staff and continue its pursuit of success under ten Hag’s leadership.

Ten Hag, who also penned a new contract with United, expressed his enthusiasm about the new appointments.

"I am delighted that Rene and Ruud have agreed to join our project, adding a wealth of experience, knowledge, and new energy to the staff.

"Now is a good time to refresh the coaching team as we look to build on the achievements of the past two years and push to the next level."
