Man United boss Erik ten Hag compared to Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool danger raised

Jamie Carragher has compared Erik ten Hag's situation at Manchester United to that of former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

The Dutchman came under intense pressure at Old Trafford last season following United's eighth-placed Premier League finish - their lowest in the top flight since 1989/90. It represented a dramatic collapse from the previous campaign when United finished third and won the Carabao Cup.

But the club's hierarchy opted to keep Ten Hag in charge following May's surprise FA Cup win over rivals Manchester City. The former Ajax boss was handed a contract extension until 2026 with several changes made to Ten Hag's backroom staff, including the addition of United legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy as assistant manager.

However, former Liverpool centre-back Carragher has shared his belief that it could be a stay of execution, similar to the one given to Rodgers at Anfield in 2015. United host Liverpool on Sunday, looking to bounce back from last weekend's defeat at Brighton.

“United’s vote of confidence in Ten Hag reminded me of the outcome of the Liverpool boardroom’s review of Brendan Rodgers’ tenure nine years ago," he wrote in his Telegraph column.

“For Rodgers, it proved a stay of execution. He could not survive the next poor sequence of results as those pushing for change felt it was a matter of when, not if, he was replaced as soon as the ideal candidate became available – as Jurgen Klopp did during the international break in October 2015.
