Man United and Liverpool have more in common than you think after Jurgen Klopp's "top solution"

It might not look it on the pitch this weekend, but Manchester United and Liverpool have an awful lot in common at the moment. Okay, only one is going for a league title as part of an assault of four trophies this season, but both are going through sizeable shake-ups as an organisation with a degree of uncertainty about what the future holds.

Liverpool know they need a manager this summer to replace the one employee they were desperate not to lose. Manchester United know they might need a new manager this summer if Erik ten Hag cannot salvage something from this season.

Both have lined up new sporting directors to come in and start work at the same time as the potential change in the dugout, with Richard Hughes set to move to Liverpool from Bournemouth and United still working on a deal that will see Dan Ashworth end his gardening leave from Newcastle and get to work.

Those changes are being overseen by people newly placed in charge of overhauling the football structure at Old Trafford and Anfield. It is here where the contrast exists.

After Ineos completed their investment into United it is Sir Dave Brailsford who is essentially overseeing the changes in the football department at United. The king of cycling's marginal gains has dipped his toe in the water in other sports, including elsewhere in Ineos' football empire, but this is a huge challenge for someone who has admitted he doesn't know an awful lot about the sport.
