Man took police on 140mph M6 police chase but forgot to fill up with fuel

A driver who hit speeds of up to 140mph as he tried to getaway from police on the M6 motorway has been jailed.

Police said the pursuit - which put the lives of others at risk - only came to an end when a Ford Fiesta ST Lewis Moore was driving ran out of fuel.

Moore, who wasn't insured, also used the hard shoulder to undertake vehicles in his way, police said, as he starts a prison sentence of 24 weeks.

The 34-year-old, from Neston, Cheshire, pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop when required by a constable, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and driving without insurance.

He was sentenced at North Staffordshire Justice Centre last Friday, January 24, and was also banned from the road for 14 months.

The pursuit began on the M6 motorway, near Stafford, on Monday, December 30 last year.

In a statement, Staffordshire Police said: "Moore, behind the wheel of a blue Ford Fiesta ST, refused to stop for officers from our road crime team (RCT), near junction 14 on the northbound carriageway.

"He proceeded to reach speeds of 140mph and used the hard shoulder to undertake vehicles in his way. The Fiesta eventually came to a stop near junction 16 when it ran out of fuel."

RCT officer, PC Kara Pilarczyk, said: "We are extremely grateful to the public who saw what was happening and gave officers plenty of space to work safely and detain the driver.

"The RCT continues to proactively target those committing 'fatal four' offences across our road networks.

"They are speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt and mobile phone use."
