Man found dead in River Irwell is named

A man whose body was recovered from the River Irwell in Bury can be named as David Kirk. Emergency services rushed to a stretch of the river off Jubilee Way near the town centre following reports on Monday, July 18.

Police said they were called a 'report of a concern for the welfare of a man in the water' at around 4pm. Police officers, paramedics and fire crews all attended the scene. Tragically a man's body was then recovered by firefighters.

He can now be named as 61-year-old David Kirk.

Mr Kirk's death has been referred to Rochdale Coroner's Court. An inquest into his death has been scheduled to take place on Wednesday, April 12 next year.

Following the tragedy, a footpath close to the river was cordoned off by police whilst forensics investigators could also be seen working in a woodland area close to the river.

In a statement issued on July 19, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said there were believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death but that enquiries were ongoing.

The inquest to be heard before Area Coroner Catherine McKenna is expected to last two days.
