Man dies after BMW crashed then caught fire on M6 motorway

A man has sadly died after a BMW crashed on the M6 motorway then caught fire, police have revealed today.

The Manchester Evening News reported last week the man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after the car collided with the central reservation. Firefighters also confirmed they were called to extinguish a subsequent fire in the boot of the car.

An air ambulance and other emergency services were scrambled to the scene at around 5.10pm on February 14, near junction 26, heading northbound around Orrell, near Wigan.

The fire service said crews tackled a fire in the boot of the car before leaving the scene 45 minutes later. Police later confirmed the man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

And now a spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed the man died shortly after arriving in hospital.

The spokesperson said: "An officer from our serious collision unit has confirmed that police attended the incident on the M6 and the man who was taken to hospital with serious injuries sadly passed away shortly after in hospital.
