Man City wage bill compared to Premier League clubs as Manchester United reality emerges

Manchester City currently have the second highest wage bill in the Premier League, though Manchester United spend the most each week on their squad, according to the latest figures.

Such numbers have come to light after English top-flight clubs agreed to introduce a hard spending cap from the 2025/26 season, which will ensure clubs' spending on transfers, wages and agent fees will be limited to five times the amount earned by the top-flight's bottom club in TV and prize money.

This new approach, referred to 'anchoring' is set to replace the current profit and sustainability rules current in place for Premier League clubs. City were one of the clubs who voted against the introduction of the spending cap, along with United and Aston Villa. Chelsea were the only side to abstain.

It means clubs will have to be more careful with their spending in future, which could well result in fewer lucrative contracts being handed out to players moving forward.

United are reported by Capology to currently have the highest wage bill in the league, spending close to £4million per week on their first-team squad. Casemiro is said to be the club's highest earner, taking home £350,000 on a weekly basis. He is closely followed by Raphael Varane (£340,000) and Marcus Rashford (£300,000).

At City, Kevin De Bruyne reportedly leads the way with £400,000 per week and Erling Haaland is second with a reported wage of £375,000. Stefan Ortega, Oscar Bobb, Jeremy Doku, Sergio Gomez, Scott Carson and Rico Lewis are the only first-team stars receiving less than
