Man City transfer truth amid Championship interest in defender

After two promotions in three seasons - and a play-off final defeat in the other - Manchester City defender Callum Doyle has his sights on another successful campaign.

Centre-back Doyle helped Leicester to the Championship title last season, having almost taken Coventry to the Premier League 12 months earlier only to taste defeat to Luton in the play-off final. In his first loan spell away from City as a 17-year-old, Doyle impressed at Sunderland to help the Black Cats into the second tier.

Such a record raised suggestions he could leave City permanently, with fellow Championship promotion-expert Taylor Harwood-Bellis raising £20m for the Blues this summer and boasting a similar record and profile. However Doyle is set for another loan spell next term - but not before he gets some valuable pre-season action under his belt with City.

Reports earlier this week suggested Norwich have won the race to sign Doyle on loan, and it is understood the 20-year-old is likely to spend the year at Carrow Road in an attempt to return the Norfolk club to the Premier League.

But with City travelling to the USA on Friday, MEN Sport understands Doyle is in line for a call-up to Pep Guardiola's squad for friendlies against Celtic, AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea given the lack of centre-back options available. The tour squad will be confirmed on Friday, with final decisions not expected until shortly before City depart for North Carolina.
