Man City star Riyad Mahrez breaks Didier Drogba's Premier League record during win over Liverpool FC

Manchester City attacker Riyad Mahrez broke Didier Drogba's record to become the African player with the highest number of assists in Premier League history.

The Algerian international registered his 56th top-flight assist by setting-up Kevin De Bruyne in the 4-1 victory over Liverpool at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon. Pep Guardiola's side went behind after Mohamed Salah opened the scoring, but Julian Alvarez made it 1-1 before the halftime break.

City took control of the clash in the second half and went 2-1 up through De Bruyne, with Mahrez putting the ball on a plate for his Blues teammate. Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish also got on the scoresheet as Guardiola's men kept the pressure on Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

Mahrez grabbed his fifth top-flight assist of the season in the win over Liverpool. As a result, the 32-year-old moved past Chelsea legend Drogba to become the African player with the most Premier League assists with 56.

Following the game, Mahrez posted a message to his followers on social media. It read: "Superb result and stellar performance from everyone today. We keep believing, always #alhamdulillah."

The attacker has also scored 82 goals in the Premier League - a competition he has won on four occasions. The Algerian star was named PFA Player of the Year for the 2015/16 campaign after impressing in Leicester's title-winning season.

His fellow winger Grealish also impressed in the win over Klopp's side on Saturday, and Guardiola was keen to praise the England international for his personal performance.
