Man City boss Pep Guardiola can match Sir Alex Ferguson record vs Real Madrid

Pep Guardiola will join Sir Alex Ferguson and Carlo Ancelotti in an elite group of managers to have won 100 Champions Leaue matches if Manchester City beat Real Madrid in either of their semi-final legs.

The Catalan coach was denied becoming a centurion by a 83rd-minute Joshua Kimmich penalty in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich as City progressed as 4-1 aggregate victors.

Guardiola has two Champions League winners’ medals from his time at Barcelona but has yet to clasp hands on the trophy again since leaving the Nou Camp. He will need to orchestrate a win over Ancelotti’s Madrid if he is to end the long wait at City this season.

A win over Los Blancos would mean Guardiola would have achieved the feat in the fewest amount of games. A first leg triumph would see him reach the milestone in 159 games or 160 if it is in the second leg.

Ancelotti took 180 matches to get there while Manchester United icon Sir Alex achieved it in his 184th European outing.

Speaking about facing Madrid for in the semi-finals for a second consecutive season, Guardiola said: "I think all the clubs in the world have the feeling if you want to win this competition you have to beat Real Madrid.

"It used to be Barcelona but now it’s Madrid. I’m so happy to be three years in a row in the Champions League semi-finals."

A late Rodrygo double prior to Karim Benzema's penalty in extra time extinguished City’s dreams of Champions League glory last season despite winning the first leg 4-3.

This year, the trip to the Bernabeu will be played first on May 9 before the return leg at the Etihad takes place on May 17.
