Man City penalty woes continue as two players fail audition to replace Riyad Mahrez vs Arsenal

Manchester City weren't expecting penalties in the Community Shield, having played 10 minutes of injury time when just eight had been added on.

A head injury to Kyle Walker extended that added time with close to 15 minutes played in total. Some of that time was taken up by Arsenal's late celebrations after Leandro Trossard's 101st-minute deflected equaliser, with the new FA rules set to extend games into the triple figures of minutes on a regular basis.

When it came to penalties, Arsenal had the momentum, and won the toss to take the spot kicks in front of their own fans. They also got to take first, giving City an uphill battle after a long game.

With Erling Haaland off the pitch and previous penalty-takers Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan both gone, there was a chance for the rest of the squad to audition for penalty duties ahead of the new season after Haaland. Pep Guardiola will be no closer to finding a new hierarchy of takers.

First up was Kevin De Bruyne, who had come off the bench for his first minutes of the summer and changed the game. He stepped up after Martin Odegaard had scored for Arsenal, and smacked his effort against the crossbar. It was well hit, but too high.

Trossard and Bukayo Saka scored either side of Bernardo Silva's good effort to make it 3-1 to Arsenal, before Rodri's low effort was saved by Aaron Ramsdale. Rodri won the Champions League with a sweetly-hit, placed effort, but this penalty lacked the same conviction. Fabio Vieira won the Shield for Arsenal and City didn't seem too disappointed that they lost out.

Going forward, though, Arsenal will claim they have broken the mental barrier between them and City.
