Man City owner Sheikh Mansour takes new role as part of United Arab Emirates government shake-up

Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been named vice president of the United Arab Emirates, one of several appointments made by Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the nation.

Sheikh Mansour was appointed into the new role on Wednesday, following previous positions as Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of the Presidential Court. He will share the position of with the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, who has held the title since 2006.

A short statement read: “The UAE president has issued a resolution, with the approval of the UAE Federal Supreme Council. To appoint Mansour bin Zayed, deputy prime minister of presidential court as UAE vice president.”

Sheikh Mansour has been owner of City since 2008 after buying a majority share from Thai businessman Thaksin Shinawatra through his investment vehicle Abu Dhabi United Group. He later acquired the final 10% share to become the sole owner.

Under his ownership, the club rose through the Premier League and won their first title for 44 years in 2012, going on to win a further five under Manuel Pellegrini and then Pep Guardiola.

Mansour has also played a role in developing a multi-club ownership model via City Football Group, which also includes MLS side New York City, Australia’s Melbourne City, Japan’s Yokohama F. Marinos, Montevideo City Torque of Uruguay, Girona FC, Sichuan Jiuniu, Mumbai City, Lommel SK and Esperance Sportive Troyes Aube Champagne.
