Man City 'eyeing move for Reece James to replace star' and other transfer rumours

Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea full-back Reece James as a replacement for Kyle Walker in the future.

Walker has stepped up to become a leading player in the City dressing room this season following the departure of Ilkay Gundogan. The England international has worn the captain's armband for the vast majority of this season with Kevin De Bruyne injured and signed a new contract until 2026 recently.

However, this has not stopped Pep Guardiola from looking ahead to the future, according to The Independent. It is understood Guardiola is interested in a move for James who has excelled in recent campaigns.

The 23-year-old captain of Mauricio Pochettino's side struggled with a hamstring injury this year but has now made a full recovery and is looking to press ahead in time for the European Championships this summer. Elsewhere, rumours continue to persist regarding the future of Kalvin Phillips at City.

Having struggled to break into the Blues' starting XI since signing from Leeds United, Phillips is reportedly restless at the Etihad and could seek a loan move in January to gain minutes ahead of the Euros in Germany. Several teams have been linked with his signature but according to Calcio Mercato, Phillips has a preferred destination.

The Italian report claims the defensive midfielder is partial to a move to Eddie Howe's Newcastle in the winter instead of joining Juventus in Serie A. The Magpies are in search of a central midfielder in the next transfer window after Sandro Tonali was handed a lengthy ban for gambling.
