Mum said her in-laws were 'b*******' - while she and husband left them with 28p

When Styal prisoner Diane Mansell saw her jailed husband Gary on video link, the couple burst into tears. She used to tell Gary that his parents were b******* who were "abusing" their good nature by staying in their home.

But in reality, the couple were defrauding the elderly couple, cashing in on their home and swindling them out of their life savings. The sorry ordeal would ultimately leave the vulnerable couple with just 28p in the bank.

Diane, 58, and Gary, 61, would spend the money for luxury holidays and designer goods. A judge condemned their actions as a "despicable display of greed and vanity", the Liverpool Echo reports.

Liverpool Crown Court heard last week how Fred and Enid Mansell moved out of their home on Stonyhurst Road, Woolton, in October 2017. Fred had recently been discharged from hospital after a serious fall and was undergoing rehabilitation, while Enid had dementia. They moved into Gary and Diane's home who were appointed as their power of attorney due to the pair's age and vulnerabilities.

Fred and Enid had considerable equity in their owned house, had two cars and a healthy amount of regular income due to their state and work pensions. But once they were made power of attorney, Diane and Gary sold the house for £150,000 - considerably under the asking price.

The court heard they wanted the money to convert their garage into a living area for their parents. But despite pocketing the cash, Diane and Gary's care of their parents was poor. They kept social services away, fed them ready meals and barely
