Man City escape UEFA Youth League examination in Leipzig as keeper lifts lid on mindset after heroics

A quirk of being a goalkeeper that means they are often the only player in the team who wants more shots on their own goal.

Manchester City were indebted to their own goalkeeper in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday as they took a point from a difficult test at RB Leipzig, with George Murray-Jones producing a number of eye-catching saves to keep his side in the contest.

But for Murray-Jones' heroics in Germany, City's under-19s could have been five goals down at half time, but instead survived an onslaught to go in at 0-0. "It's the whole point of being a keeper," he said after the match. "You want games where you get a bit peppered because you want to show what you're made of. Today was a good chance to do that."

He's not wrong - first he did well to push over a fierce shot and then kept out the header from the resulting corner, before producing another smart save from a goal-bound effort high up. As Leipzig looked dangerous on the counter, the City keeper acrobatically stopped another good volley, and then produced his best save of an impressive catalogue by reacting to a powerful header from six yards out. That was his personal favourite, too.

Another feature of the goalkeeper's mindset is being furious at any goal they concede. He was blameless for Yannick Eduardo's opener for Leipzig, as the striker turned in a cross from close range, but still rued the loss of his clean sheet.

"I'm just a bit annoyed about the goal," he said. "It would have topped it off if it was a clean sheet, but I'm happy with a point away. It was a difficult game, hopefully we can show them something when they come to Manchester."
