Man City backed for 2019 repeat amid Liverpool FC battle in Premier League and Champions League

Former Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil expects Manchester City and Liverpool to split the two major trophies on offer this season.

Pep Guardiola's side sit top of the Premier League table with nine games to go, ahead of Liverpool by a point. They also face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final and rivals Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final.

With Liverpool also still in the Champions League - they face Benfica in the last eight - the two best teams in English football could battle it out in three competitions before the end of the season. Jurgen Klopp's side have already claimed the Carabao Cup, ending City's four-year hold over it.

The race for the league title is made even more exciting by the fact the two teams still have to play each other, meeting at the Etihad on April 10 in a match that could go a long way to deciding where the trophy ends up. When City and Liverpool last went head-to-head for the title in 2019, the Blues won by a single point and a January victory over the Anfield club proved critical to that success.

However, Liverpool would not finish that season empty-handed as they won the Champions League weeks after their Premier League disappointment, beating City's quarter-final conquerors Tottenham in the final. As both teams push for glory again, Fenerbahce star Ozil expects that the pair will each win the major trophy they did back in 2019 with history repeating itself.

City return to Premier League action on April 2 with a trip to Burnley. Meanwhile, Liverpool's first game back after the international break sees them host Watford.
