Man City 6-3 Man Utd: Foden's bond with 84-year-old City fan is so wholesome
After Manchester City fan Charlie Gibson uploaded a video of himself and his grandfather attending the club’s dramatic final day Premier League-deciding victory over Aston Villa last season, millions around the world took the 84-year-old to their hearts.
Charlie’s grandfather, Barry Carr, is a lifelong City fan who suffers from dementia.
Despite his condition, Barry still loves attending games at the Etihad with Charlie – and the beautiful video of their day out at the Villa game has now been viewed more than 7.5 million times.
Among those to be touched by Barry’s story was City and England star Phil Foden. The 22-year-old has since struck up a friendship with the family, inviting them to make use of his private box at home games whenever they would like.
Barry and Charlie took Foden up on his invitation last month as they were present for City’s 6-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.
The pair made the trip to the Etihad again on Sunday afternoon for the Manchester derby – and they couldn’t have picked a better day for it with Foden bagging a hat-trick in a 6-3 victory.
Charlie has since uploaded a video of Barry’s derby day experience and it makes for truly wholesome viewing.
The bond between Barry and Foden is just wonderful to see.
Barry’s social media celebrity shows no signs of slowing down either, with more than 2.3m people having viewed the clip.
