Man charged following alleged stabbing in Wigan

A man has been charged with a series of offences following an alleged stabbing. Esmaeel Mohammed, 19, of Avon Road in Wigan, has been charged with robbery; section 18 wounding; burglary; possession of bladed article; and affray.

He was remanded in custody and was due to appear before magistrates in Manchester today (Saturday). Mr Mohammed was charged following an incident on Market Street in Wigan on Thursday.

Police said a 19-year-old man was injured following a stabbing. His condition was not said to be life-threatening.

Officers said a 30-year-old man who was arrested has been bailed pending further investigations. Earlier this week the Manchester Evening News told how a number of police vehicles blocked the main road following the incident, as an air ambulance was seen landing nearby. Roads surrounding the market in the town were also closed.

Wigan MP Lisa Nandy issued a statement and said she had been in contact with Greater Manchester Police. She said: "Keeping our town centre safe is a top priority for all of us. I will be having further discussions about this with the police and Wigan Council over the coming days."
