Maidstone United manager George Elokobi apologises to supporters after 3-1 National League South defeat at Eastbourne Borough and vows to fix things

George Elokobi apologised to Maidstone fans after another second-half collapse on Tuesday night.

For the second time in four days, United slipped to defeat after blowing a half-time lead.

Having lost 2-1 at home to Slough at the weekend, they were beaten 3-1 at relegation-threatened Eastbourne Borough.

Leo Hamblin gave the visitors a fourth-minute lead but they unravelled after the break and have slipped to 10th in National League South, albeit still only five points off the top seven.

“Firstly, I want to apologise to our supporters for that second-half performance,” Stones boss Elokobi told the club’s media team.

“It was another second-half performance of no real character, no real quality, no show.

“You keep going back to the same basic stuff, we’re having to repeat ourselves over and over, probably every 48 hours.

“At the end of the day, if we don’t do the basics, if we don’t play as a team, then you can’t win a football match.

“All of this, we spoke about it in our preparation.

“We reinforced certain things at half-time and we’ve gone out and conceded a goal three minutes into the second half.

“The way we defended, we couldn’t even string two or three passes together, but I’m the manager, that’s on me and it’s important I look at myself and reflect.

“Players knock on the door and they go ‘why am I not starting? I think I should be starting’.

“And then the opportunity comes to start or to come off the bench and make us stronger, and we looked worse.

“This is as bad as I’ve seen us play this season in the second half, so we’ve got to make sure we look into it and I’ve got some big decisions coming up.

“I always look at myself first, did I pick the right team, the right shape, and then we go from there.”
