Maidstone United manager Craig Fagan calls for derby performance against Folkestone Invicta
Maidstone United manager Craig Fagan says there are no excuses after calling for a performance against Folkestone Invicta.
United picked up their first points of the National League South campaign with a 3-0 win at Walton & Hersham on Saturday and host Invicta at the Gallagher Stadium tonight (7.45pm).
Jay Saunders’ side, 5-1 winners against the same opponents on the opening day, had a weekend off due to the postponement of their fixture at Ebbsfleet.
But Fagan won’t accept that as an excuse as Maidstone look to deliver a better showing than last season when Folkestone, then of the Isthmian Premier, beat them 2-0 in the FA Cup qualifying rounds.
“It’s a local derby and the players that are still here from last season will know we didn’t give a good account of ourselves when we played them in the FA Cup,” said Fagan.
“They’ve had a weekend off because of Ebbsfleet but we’ve got to give a performance at home. There’s no excuses.
“We need to go and play how we did on Saturday, with a bit more control and be a threat at home, and give the home fans something to shout about like we did the away fans.
“It’s just three points for us but there will be a little bit of fire in the belly because one or two that were here under us before will want to prove something after last season but we’ve got to play with calmness as well.
“At the end of the day, you’ve got to play your football - compete but still play your football.
“Yes, Jay has his team organised, and they’ll be powerful, and they did well against Walton & Hersham last week but we’ll look to give them a better test.”
Jayden Davis looks set to miss out after pulling up with a hamstring shortly after his introduction at Walton & Hersham.
