Maidstone United manager Craig Fagan considering his captaincy options for the new National League South season

Maidstone United manager Craig Fagan is still to decide on his captain for the new season.

The armband remains up for grabs following Sam Corne’s departure to Tonbridge Angels this summer.

Last season’s vice-captain, George Fowler, led the side again in Saturday’s 4-0 friendly win over Ashford and is clearly a strong contender for the role.

But there’s still time for others to influence Fagan, who intends to appoint a captaincy team for his first season in charge of the National League South club.

“We haven’t named the captain yet,” said Fagan, speaking after the Ashford win.

“But I was speaking to one or two today in terms of how they go about their business, leading by example and pushing the team on.

“I’m talking about younger players who have been at the football club, so they know what I would want, having been here as the assistant and now the manager.

“I’ve said to people they’ve got two weeks to, not change the way they’ve been because they’ve not been a problem, but to guide the team and help myself and Rob (Tuvey, assistant manager) make the decision easier by the way they’re acting in training and the way they are in games, especially the ones that have been here.

“There’ll be three or four made captain and vice-captains, which I think is important for the group because there will be times when not everyone is going to play.

“There’s going to be injuries and we need to know there’s a core group that want to drive the team on and it means something to play for the football club.

“I’ve half decided in my mind but it’s not something I’ve spoken about with Rob yet.

“I’ll sit down and have a conversation, myself, Rob and Zach (Foster-Crouch, head of recruitment), but at the moment I’ve said to the boys it’s about
