M56 closed LIVE: Motorway shut near Manchester Airport due to 'police led incident'

The M56 has been closed eastbound due to a 'police-led incident.'

The motorway has been closed between junction six, Hale Four Seasons Interchange, and junction five for Manchester Airport since around 9pm.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is also at the scene. A diversion route following the hollow circle symbol is in place for motorists to get around the closure.

Writing on X, National Highways North West tweeted: "The #M56 is CLOSED eastbound between J6 #HaleBarns and J5 @manairport due to a @NWmwaypolice led incident. National Highways Traffic Officers and @ManchesterFire are on scene."

Traffic sensors on the key route near Manchester Airport describe a "lorry involved" incident, on the M56 Eastbound.

Road monitor Inrix reads: "M56 Eastbound blocked due to accident, a lorry involved from J6 A538 Wilmslow Road (Hale Four Seasons Roundabout) to J5 (Manchester Airport)."

A diversion route is in place with drivers asked to follow the follow circle symbol.

The M56 has been closed eastbound between junctions 5 and 6.
