M4 crash causes heavy traffic

There was heavy traffic on Wednesday morning due to recovery work after an M4 crash. Traffic monitoring service Inrix warned of an incident on the M4 westbound from J24 A449 (Coldra) to J25 B4596 Caerleon Road (Caerleon) in Newport. One person has been conveyed to hospital for "further treatment", a spokesperson for Welsh Ambulance Service has confirmed.

Lane one of three was previously closed. Gwent Police confirmed that they received a report of a road traffic collision involving one car at around 9.55am this morning, with officers in attendance. Traffic Wales also warned motorists of the heavy congestion in the area, telling motorists to allow for additional travel time.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "We received a report of a road traffic collision involving one car on the M4 in Newport, between junction 24 and 25 heading west, at around 9.55am on Wednesday 31 July. Officers are in attendance and one lane is currently closed to allow for recovery of the car. Motorists are advised to avoid the area as congestion in the area is heavy."

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called today, at approximately 9:58am, to reports of a single vehicle road traffic collision between junctions 24 and 25 of the M4. We sent one emergency ambulance, one advanced paramedic practitioner and one Cymru High Acuity Response Unit to the scene. We conveyed one patient to hospital for further treatment."

At around 11.05am, Traffic Wales confirmed that the incident was cleared. Inrix has said that there is slow traffic due to the earlier accident, but all lanes have reopened. Inrix confirmed at around 11.13am that traffic had returned to normal.
