M4 closed with long delays expected for at least 12 hours

Roadworks on the M4 have closed a junction and are causing delays to motorists on Sunday morning. J26 (Malpas) in Newport is closed for "essential expansion joint repairs."

Traffic cameras show work well underway at J26 with traffic beginning to queue on the approach as the road narrows into a single lane to direct drivers off the road. Traffic Wales is reporting congestion between J28 (Tredegar Park) and J26 eastbound, and says to "allow additional time for your journey."

The road will remain closed until 6am on Monday, February 12. The works, described as "safety-critical," were originally due to begin on Saturday with rugby fans warned their journey to Twickenham could be delayed - but this was postponed at short notice on Saturday morning.

Traffic reporting service Inrix says: "M4 Eastbound closed due to weekend roadworks until the early hours of Monday morning at J26 A4051 (Malpas Road). Expect delays. Diversion - via the exit and entry slips."
