Lyndon Dykes injury latest as Scotland star undergoes scan to provide quick-fire answer to Euro 2024 sweat

Scotland have been dealt another huge Euro 2024 injury scare after Lyndon Dykes left training on a stretcher.

With just two weeks to go until Steve Clarke’s side tackle Germany in the showpiece opener the big striker was carried off at Lesser Hampden with his left leg causing serious concern. Team mates and coaching staff could be seen looking on anxiously as the QPR hitman collapsed to the turf. He was comforted by skipper Andy Robertson before leaving the 11am session on a stretcher.

Dykes underwent a scan on Friday night and the results will be assessed by SFA medics on Saturday morning but the injury, coming just three days before the first of two warm-up matches against Gibraltar, will be a huge concern for Clarke. The national boss is already contending with a right-back headache after Aaron Hickey and Nathan Patterson were both ruled out of Euro 2024 through injury.

Dykes featured in all eight of the qualifying games and scored a crucial 87th equaliser in the 2-1 win over Norway. The 36-times capped striker has netted nine goals for his country and was widely expected to begin the opener in Munich against Germany. Clarke could turn to Hearts hitman Lawrence Shankland or Che Adams of Southampton with Liverpool teen Ben Doak and Bournemouth’s Ryan Christie other options.

Should his worst fears be confirmed there’s still plenty of time to call up a replacement for Dykes too with Luton’s Jacob Brown or Bristol City’s Scotland Under-21 striker Tommy Conway both options. Scotland face Gibraltar in Faro on Monday night before taking on Finland in a Hampden farewell on Friday evening.
