Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp can't hide reaction to Manchester United’s defeat to Newcastle

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp grimaced when he saw the scoreline of Manchester United’s Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle.

Erik ten Hag suffered his eighth loss in United’s opening 15 matches and his side looked devoid of ideas in Wednesday’s 3-0 misery. Two first-half goals from Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at the break before Joe Willock sealed the result on the hour mark.

Liverpool, meanwhile, beat Bournemouth 2-1 to book a quarter-final bout with West Ham. As Klopp sat down for his post-match press conference, he looked aghast when he saw the result of United’s own tie, letting out an "ooo".

His United counterpart is under spades of pressure at Old Trafford. All but one of Ten Hag’s seven wins this term have come by one-goal margins, with his side shipping 26 goals in 15 outings. Six have come in the past two matches.

Speaking after full-time, Ten Hag accepted the burden rested on his shoulders but says he will not back down from his responsibilities. "I understand [the scrutiny],” he said.

“When the results are not there then there is a logical process questioning that. I am confident I can do it. I have done it at all my clubs and also last year, I did it here as well.

"But at this moment, we are also in a bad place. I take responsibility for it. I see it as a challenge, I'm a fighter, I am in the fight and I have to make sure I share the responsibility with the players that we stick together, fight together and get better results in."
