LIVE: Woman rushed to hospital after being hit by car as police close off road - latest updates

A woman has been taken to hospital after being hit by a car in Wigan.

The incident happened on Darlington Street East just after 11am this morning, police said. The woman was rushed to hospital from the scene after being knocked down.

Her injuries are serious, a GMP spokesperson said. The police helicopter was deployed to the scene.

A stretch of the road remains cordoned off this afternoon as serious collision unit officers investigate. Darlington Street East is closed both ways between Warrington Lane and St Patricks Way.

In a tweet, TfGM said: "A577 Darlington Street East, Wigan. Road closed due to a road traffic collision.

"Emergency services are on scene to assist. #StagecoachGM services will be diverted.

"Please check before you travel #TfGMTraffic for updates."
