LIVE updates: Huge emergency services response after serious crash on M56

Emergency services rushed to the M56 near Wythenshawe this evening following a crash. Pictures from the scene show multiple fire engines in attendance as well as paramedics and police between junctions 2 and 5.

Two lanes are closed off whilst the emergency services deal with the incident. A screen has also been put up by the fire service on the hard shoulder of the motorway.

The nature of injuries or how the incident happened has not yet been confirmed. The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for information on the incident.

It is thought the crash happened shortly before 8.30pm this evening, with road users told to expect some congestion due to the lane closure. Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted: "M56 between J2 and J5. Two lanes are closed traveling westbound due to a road traffic collision. Allow extra time for your journey."
