Live updates as Ryan Giggs arrives at court ahead of his trial starting

Former Wales manager Ryan Giggs has arrived at court to face trial, where he is accused of attacking and controlling his ex-girlfriend and assaulting her sister.

Giggs is alleged to have used controlling and coercive behaviour against Kate Greville between August 2017 and November 2020. He is also accused of common assault of her younger sister, Emma Greville, at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, on 1 November 2020.

The trial was scheduled for January, but it was pushed back to August due to a backlog of cases. Giggs has pleaded not guilty to all charges he is accused of. The 10-day trial begins on Monday (August 8) at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

The first day of the trial is taking place at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court after Manchester Crown Court was shut due to testing for asbestos. The trial will then move to Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday for the remainder of the proceedings. Arrangements for the switch in locations were only finalised on Thursday, as the trial was set to begin.

Giggs stepped down as the boss of the Wales national side as a result of the accusations in November 2020.

The former Manchester United man left the role officially on 20 June 2022. He said: "After much consideration, I am standing down from my position as manager of the Wales men's national team with immediate effect.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to manage my country, but it is only right that the Wales FA, the coaching staff and the players prepare for the tournament with certainty, clarification and without speculation around the position of their head coach."
