Live updates as MSs set to vote on whether to increase number of Senedd members
Senedd members will today vote on whether to back plans to increase the number of politicians in the Welsh Parliament from 60 to 96. It is widely expected the measure will pass as Plaid and Labour back the plans, as does the sole Lib Dem in the Senedd. The Conservatives however oppose it.
The proposal is for:
Closed proportional lists to be used with seats allocated using the D’Hondt system, which is currently used for the regional list part of the current electoral system
There would be 16 constituencies made up by using the 32 UK Parliamentary constituencies proposed by the Boundary Commission for Wales once it concludes its 2023 Parliamentary Review
MSs will be asked to back a report written by the Special Purpose Committee on Senedd Reform. Plaid Cymru and Labour both back the plans along with the First Minister Mark Drakeford and Plaid leader Adam Price. They had announced their plans before the committee reported on the result of its inquiry. A two-hour debate has been scheduled in the Senedd which will be followed by a vote.
