Live updates as flash flooding hits south Wales

Heavy rainfall is causing flooding in parts of south Wales on Friday evening. There are some road closures in place as well as flood alerts.

Videos and pictures taken in Whitchurch, Cardiff on Friday show the impact of the rainfall at Whitchurch High Street. Posting a video of the flooded street on its Facebook page the Brook Bistro posted: "For those of you who can’t get to Venice this summer, tonight we bring Venice to you."

Talbot Road in Port Talbot is also closed while there is a flood warning for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend borough. In Gwent police are advising motorists avoid the A449 between Newport and Usk.

The forecasting agency says that heavy rain may lead to some travel disruption and flooding in places and that it is likely further warnings will be issued across the weekend. The Met Office has also given its verdict on the reported mini UK heatwave later this month.

Commuters are warned to expect spray and sudden flooding, leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: "The outbreaks of rain that we've seen arrive through Thursday across the south and south west will essentially keep going during Friday and into the weekend. There will be ebbs and flows in the rainfall. There'll be pulses of heavier rain at times and then lighter rain at times."
