Live updates as fire forces closure of large area of Newport

Emergency services are currently dealing with a property fire on a street in Newport.

At around 4.14am this morning, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service shared a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, confirming it was dealing with a property fire in Commercial Street in the city.

In the post, it wrote: "Emergency Services are currently dealing with a property fire in Commercial Street, Newport. Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed."

In the meantime, Gwent Police has said there have been four road closures in Newport, including Commercial Street itself. At around 3.40am this morning, the police force shared a statement on its X page, which said that Palmyra Place, Commercial Street, Ivor Street and Hill Street were all closed.

It advised road users to avoid the area and find alternative routes. We have contacted the emergency services for further details on both incidents.
